This is my thesis project at RISD. I built this interactive installation to explore the possibility of using Taste to evoke, preserve, and transmit our emotion, to create a new way of non-verbal communication. Moodshake analysis the sentiment of your message, and pick/mix flavour based on the emotion state.
Human emotion is complicated; it is hard to capture and communicate. But what fascinates
me the most is exactly this inexplicability. I’m also very interested in the beauty
and poetry of people’s inner worlds. When I’m talking about communication emotion,
I’m not trying to find a clear way to define our feelings and explain it to other people.
Instead, I want to keep the communication subtle and implicit. I want to preserve the
beauty and complexity of our emotion, but explore the art of communication.
This interest led me to use other senses as media and tool for communication. Our emotion can affect how we make sense the world, and our physical sense can also evoke synesthesia of emotion. I think empathy is a great tools for communication, because it’s subtle and implicit and also universal. I want to build a series of tangible/analog interactive devices to explore the possibility of using our senses to evoke, preserve, and transmit our emotion.
Without language, without explanation, can we just use our senses to feel, and understand? Can we use our taste to send a message? I hope I can explore the possibility of non verbal communication through this project.
This book records the process of this project, including research to experiments.

Solenoid Valve Testing
After testing, I found this type of Solenoid Valve was too tight for thick liquid.
